4 Tricks To Keep Separation Anxiety At Bay

4 Tricks To Keep Separation Anxiety At Bay When youbecome a mom, you departure hearing, reading and talking a lot about staffelung anxiety. For the first 18 months of my sons life, I thought I was one of the lucky moms whose kid handled my absence in stride. After all,he warmed to friends and family immediately, going willingly (almost too willingly) into any pair of outstretched arms he encountered. He was a phenomenal sleeper, rarely complaining when Ilefthim in his crib and dozing all through the night withbarely a peep. And the first day I dropped him off at daycare, he waved me away with a big smile, nary a tear in sight (unless youre counting mine). Then came the second day. This time, as I began to walk out of the classroom, his face crumpled insheer panic. His mouth let out an ear-piercing wail as he reached for me, begging to be picked up and rescued. So I did what I thought any good mom would do scooped him up tight and tried to soothe him by telling him Id be back before he knew it. When I triedto put him back down, he wrapped his arms and legs around me in a death grip, refusing to put his feet on the floor. Eventually, he didonly to repeat the cycle all again. All the while, I ignored his poor teachers attempts to shoo me out the door. I shouldve listened. They knew a lot more about separation anxiety than I did. Every action I took that morning only made thingsworse.Dont do what I did. Instead, follow these simple tips to keep the separation anxiety at bay.1. Always say goodbye.Children need to know when youre about to leave. Sneaking out may save you some hassle in the moment but when your child suddenly realizes youre gone, theyre going to be even more upset than they would have been in the first place. Give your child the same courtesy you would give anyone, and say goodbye before you go off on your merry way.2. Dont make a spectacle. My son was already nervous when he realized I was about to leave. Drawing out the process by picking him up and pu tting him down over and over only intensifiedthe emotion of the situation. The next time you have to say goodbye to your child, a warm hug and kiss will do just fine. Lingering and coddling your kid just a little bit longer might seem like youre comforting them, but in reality, that behavior signals thatyouare uncomfortable about leaving. If you dont seem okay with leaving, your kid will definitely not be.3.Establisha goodbye routine.Kids do best when they know what to expect. Whether youre leaving your child at daycare, school or with a sitter, creating a consistent goodbye pattern will set them up for a pain-free separation. Remindthem that youre going somewhere an hour before so they have time to prepare. Tell them how long youll be gone. Even if they donthave a great sense of time, theyll take comfort in the assurance of your return. 4. When you go, stay gone.I learned this the hard way. I dropped my son off one morning, then had to go to the office to talk to the director. On m y way out, I thought, what the hell let me just peek my head in the classroom. BIG MISTAKE. Seeing my face made him think he was about to get sprung early. When he found out he wasnt, the vicious goodbye cycle kicked in all over again. Sowhile the urge tocheck in is tempting, keep in mind thatall the back and forth may be toying with your childs emotions.--Diane Levine is the Associate Creative Director of the award-winning branding and marketing agency Think Creative. Our product roadmap and the new features we are launching this year are going to make a huge positive impact on the day to day workflows of our marketers. I cant wait to have a role in those launches One of the biggest challenges in almo st all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 mio construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the indus try in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to th e Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, ma king a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of kofferverstrker welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a scho ol, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

Robot Helps People Get Dressed

Robot Helps People Get Dressed Robot Helps People Get Dressed Robot Helps People Get DressedEvery January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where some 200,000 business leaders and forward thinkers gather to view the newest technologies, there is always interest in when robots as versatile household assistants may become reality. Thus far journalists typically report that despite all the flashy gadgets and promises made, the feasibility of a multi-purpose household robot to serve as a reliable and affordable butler-chef-cleaner-fetcher-etc. is much further in the future than many would imagine. That doesnt mean engineers arent making considerable progress in robotics in areas they believe will make life easier and better, especially for the mora than 1 million Americans who need extra help in performing everyday physical tasks, such as older adults, wounded veterans, and people who have suffered a stroke or debilitating injury. In May, researchers from Georgia Tech presented a paper, Deep Haptic Model Predictive Control for Robot-Assisted Dressing, at the International Conference on Robotics Automation about a robot they created that may help people who require daily physical assistance getting dressed. The robot uses haptics, rather than vision, to help it guide a hospital gown onto a rolles hand, around the elbow, and onto the shoulder. For You Robots Make Self-Repairing Cities PossiblePR2 helps a human participant get into a hospital gownThe work is being done in Associate Professor Charlie Kemps healthcare robotics lab, using a Willow Garage PR2 research robot. The lead Georgia Tech Ph.D. student on the team, Zackory Erickson, said the robot taught itself to slide a hospital gown on a persons arm by analyzing nearly 11,000 simulated examples to learn what it feels like to be the human receiving assistance. From this simulation of both successes and failures, the robot learned to estimate the optimal force. Doing a similar number of trials on humans could have been dangerous as well as very time-consuming, Erickson says. However, one of the biggest engineering challenges was setting up a simulation the robot could learn from and still transfer to the real world, he says. Simulation is a very crude approximation of the real world. When you run a simulation, you have to model whats going to happen in the real world, Erickson says. The team chose haptics as the sensorial method and simulation for learning for a couple of reasons. One of the challenging aspects of robots helping with dressing is that they cant directly see whats happening since clothing typically hides a persons body, Kemp says. Another challenge is that doing a good job depends on the forces felt by the person. Too much force can result in discomfort. In the real world, our robot doesnt have direct access to what a person is feeling. Yet in the simulated world where our robot learns, it can directly measure the forces applied to the person. He notesthat the team cho se a hospital gown because its a widely used standard clothing item in healthcare and that many steps of dressing are similar to pulling a tube of material over a body part. After the simulated learning, the robot moved on to performing the action on humans, which took about 10 seconds.Erickson sayswhat makes this work differently from past efforts is that the robot takes a human perspective. Other work typically takes a robot-centric approach where the machine thinks about its actions and how its going to succeed. It doesnt take into consideration what impact its going to have on the person. As the robot is pulling the gown on someones body, its trying to estimate based on what it feels on its fingertips, what is the person feeling on his or her body, he says.As part of the learning, the robot can predict the consequences of moving the gown in different ways. Some motions made the gown taut, pulling hard against the persons body. Other movements slid the gown smoothly. The robot us es these predictions to select motions that comfortably dress the arm, Erickson says. The researchers also varied the timing of the robots thinking and actions to allow it to think as much as a fifth of a second into the future while strategizing about its next move. Less than that caused the robot to fail more often.Kemp is happy with the progress and is optimistic that some of the approaches and principles will be broadly applicable wherever robots are intelligently interacting with people and the world. Weve taught a robot to predict the physical implications of its actions during a complex physical process, he says. The work has also shown that you dont have to have an incredibly high-fidelity, physics-based simulator to teach a robot how to do useful things, he says. One of the challenges is how to strike that balance between the fidelity of the simulation and the computational requirements. But there is still much to be done. Dressing is a much more complex task than some other a ctivities of daily living Kemps lab has worked on, such as shaving or feeding. In terms of dressing, weve worked with a hospital gown and putting one sleeve of one arm of the gown on a persons arm. You can imagine there are still a ways to go with just that task. Were working on more on that, Kemp says. The team is also looking at some other simulation-based approaches to facilitate testing with people with disabilities.Thats something extremely important because just as testing in the real world is very important, if you actually want people with disabilities to benefit, you have to test it with people with disabilities. Otherwise you dont know. More broadly, Im optimistic that in the long run, robots can help other people manage in their daily lives, Kemp says. Maybe help people that are just a bit tired and want help around the house.Nancy S. Listening to Women#8217;s Guts

Listening to Women8217s Guts Listening to Women8217s Guts A new study from CareerBuilder paid attention to the persistent feelings of female workers. Although these interviewed employees did not always have access to all the facts, many strongly suspected that their male counterparts received significantly more money and respect than they did.According to the study, thirty-eight percent of female workers said they feel they are paid less than male counterparts with the same skills and experience, up from 34 percent in 2008 when the survey was last conducted, and up from 31 percent in 2003.Also, the nagging feeling of injustice is not limited to paychecks. An even greater number of women think that men have more career advancement opportunities within their organizations. Women were also likely to feel like men were more frequently recognized for their achievements. A little praise and gratitude can go a long way, but apparently, women are expected to continue along without the same amount of recognition.Women suspected that among the reasons men were more likely to receive better positions was because men sought after bonding with management. According to CareerBuilders press release, one-third of women attributed the disparity in pay and career advancement to the fact that they dont rub elbows or schmooze with management as much as men.

Surviving Air Force Basic Training Inspections

Surviving Air Force Basic Training InspectionsSurviving Air Force Basic Training InspectionsDuring the first week of Air Force Basic Training, your training instructor will explain how to get ready for a dormitory inspection. Your dormitory must be kept spotlessly clean at all times, and your area (bunk, locker, and drawers) will be inspected. In Air Force basic training, everything has its place, right down to an eighth of an inch. Your underwear must be in its place. Your uniforms must be hung in their designated place. Your shampoo, soap, toothpaste, etc., must be clean and in their exact place. A day or two after your training instructor explains the standards, you and your flight members will try very, very hard, and you will fail the first inspection miserably. Not to worry, youll get another chance to please your T.I. later that same week when he or she does a follow-up inspection. Youll get plenty of chances to get the dormitory inspection right throughout your entire stay. Graded Inspections and Red Line Inspections Some of these periodic inspections will be graded inspections, meaning that they count toward your final basic training grade and honor graduate qualifications. Other inspections will be just for practice, and for the T.I. to remind you of whos in charge. Around week three or four, youll undergo the dreaded Red Line Inspection. By this time, youll have been inspected by your own T.I. several times, and youll be feeling cocky. However, the Red Line inspection is graded, and its performed by your T.I.s bosses. They cut no slack at all. Pretty much everyone will get some demerits during this inspection, no matter how well you think youre prepared. Some recruits are even recycled as a result of this inspection. Inspection Tips and Tricks Strings pop out everywhere, especially after dry-cleaning, so make sure you inspect them meticulously. Keep two sets of BDUs untouched in your wall locker on a serviceable hanger, ready for inspection w ith all of the strings clipped. Check them just before inspection. Your clothing drawer has towels, underwear, brown t-shirts and socks. Everything must show signs of use (except the pantyhose), so use them as little as possible, preferably once if you can, then wash it and properly fold and place it in your drawer so that you can leave it like that for inspections. Early on your flight will learn how to conduct dust drills. Its pretty much dusting your dorm top to bottom with your hands and on your hands and knees. One of your flight members will yell out the commands, and the rest of the flight will echo the command as they do it. Echoing is something you learn to do really well and really often in BMT. Training Instructor Inspection Tactics Dont even think of putting clean clothes in your laundry bag so that you dont have to display them for the inspection. The T.I.s are well aware of this trick. In fact, sometimes these sneaky T.I.s will purposely allow recruits to get away with this during the first few weeks of basic, just so they think it works, then pounce during the Red Line Inspection, catching half the flight. One recruit tells of how his flight could never get the floors shiny enough to satisfy the T.I. They would buff it, and buff it, and buff it, but using the flssig wax they were required to use, it just wasnt possible to get it shiny. They werent allowed to use paste wax because it was a fire hazard. After they had been chewed out on the floor a dozen times or so, one of them bought a can of paste wax from the Troop Mall. They hid it behind a ceiling tile. The next time they waxed the floor we used the paste wax, and the T.I. was suddenly happy. They were all scared because they had never seen him smile before. They continued to use the paste wax throughout the remainder of basic training. On the day before graduation, the T.I. walked in, called themto attention, then walked directly to the ceiling tile, poked it with his baton, and the wax fell down.He calmly said, I just wanted you guys to know that you werent getting away with nothing that I didnt want you to get away with.
