The Key for Unemployed Job Seekers If you are an unemployed job seeker, your job search might be more difficult because you dont already have a pre-existing schedule to help you establish a structure for your search. There are pros and cons to being an unemployed job seeker. You have more time than those who are employed, but you also have to create your own structure and schedule from scratch to ensure youre effective in your job search. I recently spoke with a career coaching client, Andrea, about this exact issue. She was finding it hard to structure her days in a way that she was effective in her job search. At the end of each day, she felt like she had taken action, but wasnt sure if it was the most effective action. She didnt have a sense of accomplishment. Every day and every week I suggest having a basic template for your job search that creates your own schedule. Go by the hour if needed. For example, every day you start your work by 9 am and from 9-11 you work on networking, and searching online job boards. Take a break for lunch, and an additional hour for working out/doing personal things if needed. Then get back to your job search from 2-5. During that time you can work on applying for jobs, revising your resume, updating your LinkedIn profile, making connections in LinkedIn or reaching out to recruiters. You can set your schedule however you want to. The key is to have a structure in place so that you know when you want to be working on specific things. This will help you establish what goals you want to achieve each day and each week. Having a schedule will help ensure youre using your time and energy wisely and that youve accomplished what you want to each day. Atlanta Career Coach P.S. What To Do If You Earn Less Than Your Predecessor Q: I just found out my predecessor made more than me. My boss doesnât know I know. What should I do? A: Before you work yourself up into a fury, keep in mind that âitâs unusual for someone to come into a role and make the same exact salary as the previous person in the job,â says Lydia Frank, editorial director at compensation data provider PayScale.com. Also, there may be a good reason that you make less. Many factors affect compensation. Employers typically stick within a general range for each position, and where you fall within that range depends a lot on what you bring to the tableâ"your years of experience, your unique skill set and your education. Unless those attributes are identical to those of your predecessor, you shouldnât necessarily expect to command the same salary. Additionally, as unfair as this may seem, the economy may play a role: The person you replaced may simply have been hired during more flush times at your company. If after having weighed these factors you still see an imbalance, however, you should talk to your boss. But youâll want to be careful about how you do it, as it can be a delicate dance to get your boss to see your side. (Itâs been widely reported that one of the factors in the recent high-profile ouster of New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson was her complaints about earning less than the person she replaced.) First, get some data behind you, since you want to avoid bringing up what you know about your predecessorâs pay. By mentioning that, âYouâd be putting your boss on the defensive,â says Frank. âThatâs not a conversation thatâs likely to go well.â There are several ways to find out whatâs an appropriate income for your position. You can check salary sites, such as PayScale.com which crowd sources data on compensation, and Glassdoor.com, which posts company salary reports. You can also turn to your network and ask current or former colleagues for insight. (While itâs still taboo to talk about pay, it may be easier if you ask about a range.) Then tell your manager that youâve done some research on salaries in your position, and the data youâve found indicates that youâre are at the low-end of the scale. From there, build your case about why you are a top performer and should earn more, using quantifiable examples of your successes and highlighting wins that align with your bossâs and the companyâs goals. If your supervisor pushes back, ask what you can do to get to that next level: Get more training, add a particular skill or hit a sales target? The bottom line: When it comes to your salary, whatâs most relevant is whether you are making what you should based on the current market price for your position and your qualifications, not what the person before you earned.

Also, my last job was in Branson, Missouri, and my prior job was in San Diego. I am now in Palm Springs. Can I omit the city were I worked on my resume but keep the other information? - Bernice J.T.: Well, Bernice, I doubt that where you've lived and worked is the issue. DALE: I agree that it's not THE issue. But employers are looking for someone who'll be around awhile, and they know that people who've recently relocated are, statistically speaking, more likely to relocate in the coming year. J.T.: But more important than relocation is the recruiter's need to be able to connect the dots in your work history and see that it leads to a logical reason to hire you. DALE: Before you can connect the dots, you have to find them. What skills did you develop in each job? What did you accomplish for your employer? Once you have a list, you can put ones that connect into a career narrative. Just remember that the goal of this exercise is to sell something that companies want to buy. J.T.: Being new to town, you probably don't have much of a network to call upon. So you're going to have to contact managers at employers who might need your skills and ask for advice on the best way to present yourself to their companies. That's the kind of proactive marketing that job searching takes these days. Sitting back and applying online is easy but unlikely to be effective. Instead, build a network by seeking local advice. DALE: That's where being new to town can be an advantage. There's still the kindness of strangers, and that's why you can leave the names of cities on your resume. Start by following J.T.'s advice, and once you are meeting managers and explaining the logic of your career, it will be easy to explain why you picked their city as a place to live - after all, they picked it, too. And the first day I dropped him off at daycare, he waved me away with a big smile, nary a tear in sight (unless youre counting mine).Then came the second day.This time, as I began to walk out of the classroom, his face crumpled insheer panic. His mouth let out an ear-piercing wail as he reached for me, begging to be picked up and rescued. So I did what I thought any good mom would do scooped him up tight and tried to soothe him by telling him Id be back before he knew it. When I triedto put him back down, he wrapped his arms and legs around me in a death grip, refusing to put his feet on the floor. Eventually, he didonly to repeat the cycle all again.All the while, I ignored his poor teachers attempts to shoo me out the door. I shouldve listened. They knew a lot more about separation anxiety than I did. Every action I took that morning only made thingsworse.Dont do what I did. Instead, follow these simple tips to keep the separation anxiety at bay.1. Always say goodbye.Children need to know when youre about to leave. Sneaking out may save you some hassle in the moment but when your child suddenly realizes youre gone, theyre going to be even more upset than they would have been in the first place. Give your child the same courtesy you would give anyone, and say goodbye before you go off on your merry way.2. Dont make a spectacle. My son was already nervous when he realized I was about to leave. Drawing out the process by picking him up and pu tting him down over and over only intensifiedthe emotion of the situation. The next time you have to say goodbye to your child, a warm hug and kiss will do just fine. Lingering and coddling your kid just a little bit longer might seem like youre comforting them, but in reality, that behavior signals thatyouare uncomfortable about leaving. If you dont seem okay with leaving, your kid will definitely not be.3.Establisha goodbye routine.Kids do best when they know what to expect. Whether youre leaving your child at daycare, school or with a sitter, creating a consistent goodbye pattern will set them up for a pain-free separation. Remindthem that youre going somewhere an hour before so they have time to prepare. Tell them how long youll be gone. Even if they donthave a great sense of time, theyll take comfort in the assurance of your return. 4. When you go, stay gone.I learned this the hard way. I dropped my son off one morning, then had to go to the office to talk to the director. On m y way out, I thought, what the hell let me just peek my head in the classroom. BIG MISTAKE. Seeing my face made him think he was about to get sprung early. When he found out he wasnt, the vicious goodbye cycle kicked in all over again. I fell in love wit h the marketing technology space and how it can simplify marketers daily workflows so they can spend more time on strategy. Then I joined another martech company that focuses specifically on the retail vertical. I met so many awesome people who work within the eCommerce ecosystem and knew Id found my niche. Upon a move to New York, I started researching emerging technology companies and had heard great things about Bluecore through my network, so I reached out about a position.TS What does your typical day at work look like?KS I feel lucky to work very cross-functionally. Every day I collaborate with so many wonderful people, including our amazing R&D team, that designs and creates our product, our customer-facing teams and even our customers. I spend half of my time brainstorming with others and the other half putting pen to paper. A big part of my role is working on our new product launches, where I gather input from various stakeholders and get to hear from the smartest people in our space. Examining what was done in the past and iterating is so critical for our growthTS How well do we walk the walk when we say we put product and customer first?KS We put our customers first by building for their needs, and not just the features that are requested, but the capabilities our customers do not yet know they need. We choose to focus our product development on the features that will drive the highest performance for our customers.TS If you could switch jobs with anyone, who would it be?KS Definitely the Data Insights team. What they do is so core to Bluecore they spend their days understanding the data we collect for our customers to help solve the biggest problems in retail. These range from how to reduce unsubscribes and how to turn a non-buyer into a buyer to how to turn a brick and mortar shopper into a multichannel shopper.TS What about Bluecore do you value the most?KS My team. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 mio construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the indus try in this era of rapid change. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to th e Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, ma king a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of kofferverstrker welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a scho ol, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.
