What Your Interview Attire Says About Your Company - Spark Hire
What Your Interview Attire Says About Your Company - Spark HireAs we have mentioned many times before, its normal for a job seeker to fall under judgement in the hiring process. After all, you are taking stock of a lot of their mannerisms, past jobs, word choice and of course their interview attire. No matter what industry they are trying to penetrate, job seekers are told to dress professionally for their job interview. Would you hire a job seeker that came into your sekretariat for an interview wearing flip flops, sweat pants and a t-shirt? Chances are very high that answer is a big no. So if job seekers are being judged on their interview attire, dont you think you are as well? And by extension, your company? The answer is, yes. What you wear to a job interview with a job seeker matters greatly. For one, you are the representative of your company for job seekers and they will fruchtwein definitely judge you on what you are wearing. If you wouldnt hire a job seeker that failed to dr ess professionally, then you must hold yourself to the same standards. If an employer was dressed shabbily, job seekers may think that they do not care about their job, are unprofessional, or are just simply sloppy. These are all perceptions you want to avoid when it comes to job seekers and the hiring process. Especially if you are trying to reel in and keep top talent. It is well understood that every company has a different dress code they adhere to. Some offices will prefer employees to dress in business professional every day and others may allow their employees to dress very casual. If your company requires you to wear business casual or business professional every day, then you dont have to worry about your interview attire since you will already be dressed appropriately. However, if your office has a very casual dress code then you should prepare for the interview ahead of time and wear the appropriate clothes.Even though your office enjoys and celebrates a casual dress code, dressing down in a job interview sends job seekers the wrong message. In preparation for job interviews, job seekers are told to avoid the most obvious of offenses jeans, t-shirts, flip flops and hats. As an employer, you should do the same. Flip flops and sweat pants are examples of terrible interview attire and should be avoided at all costs. Wearing these clothing items dont allow for you to project an authoritative stance as an employer or hiring manager. It will be easy for the job seeker to dismiss you as lazy, unproductive and perhaps even immature. In an article for Forbes, clinical psychologist Dr. Jennifer Baumgartner was quoted saying, Anything where it looks like you didnt take the time or make the effort comes across badly. The worst clothing is the kindthat shows you didnt pay attention to your body/age/situation. Any clothes that prohibit you from doing your job well send the wrong message. It may seem petty, but its true that people are judging you by the way you look - and that includes the way you dress. This is especially true in the corporate world. Job seekers want to know they are working for a reputable, good company. Dressing professionally is one way of showing them that your company is a good company to work for. Be conscious of what you wear to a job interview regardless of your companys dress code and be sure you are presenting your best self- for both you and your company.Do you think that it is OK to wear casual or unprofessional clothes to a job interview with a job seeker? What if you have a casual dress code in the office? Let us know what you think in the comments section belowIMAGE Courtesy of Flickr by Seeds_of_Peace

Negotiate a Bigger Salary with Your Resume
Negotiate a Bigger Salary with Your ResumeNegotiate a Bigger Salary with Your ResumeCareful with that phrasing Certain words and phrases can reduce your compensation. She welches perfect for the job.She had experience teaching both online and in the Middle East, she welches available to work immediately and she had a masters degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).She was so perfect, the hiring company, TalktoCanada.com, an online English language-training course based in Canada, was prepared to offer her 20 percent mora than the typical starting salary, said Jillian Zavitz, programs manager at TalktoCanada.com, who agreed to interview the candidate.Hiring professionals will tell you that its primarily your interview, negotiation skills and salary history that determine your salary offer. Those are all important factors, but youll want to prime the salary pump by presenting yourself as the perfect candidate in your resume, said Zavitz and several hiring manage rs who spoke to Ladders. The info you present in your resume can be so finely tuned to a job offer that employers will boost their initial salary offers in response, she said. Here are some tips from hiring professionals on how to make that happen.Promote the Bottom Line in Your Summary StatementIf you want to maximize the dollar signs potential employers see when they look at your resume, youve got to make your summary statement so enticing that they will covet your skills for their firms, said Dr. Marlene Caroselli, a corporate trainer and the author of 61 management books. Caroselli offered examples of two summary statements that fail in this effort and one that succeedsPoor example Curriculum writer with many years experience in a wide variety of employment situations. The example lacks specificity and hence fails to grab a readers attention, she said. Curriculum writer is a vague term that could apply to a second-grade teacher or a corporate trainer. Many years is equally vague, she said it could mean three years or 20 years. Wide variety could mean the same teacher taught both second and third grades.Poor example World-recognized author of instructional design materials with a client base of Fortune 100 companies and Department of Defense. This example sounds self-serving and possibly untrue, Caroselli said. There really arent many people who can claim to be world-recognized authors, she noted. Its also needlessly limited, she said. If the applicant has worked for more than one agency in the federal government, why limit the statement to just DoD?Good example Instructional designer with 20 years experience providing training products and services to Fortune 100 companies and the federal government. Recognized name in HR publishing field, with worldwide clients. This summary statement is more specific, citing a precise number of years experience as well as impressive client citations Fortune 100 companies and the federal government.According to Caroselli, My thinking is that the well-written summary will do two things - intimate the real value of the applicant and thus prompt the employer to offer as much as she can so this prospect wont go elsewhere.Dont Hide Under Salary-Shrinking TitlesCertain words, like assistant, can work against your salary claims and deflate your starting offer, said David Couper, a career and life coach.Couper recently worked with a client who had been an assistant to a senior vice president but has always had much more responsibility and has also done some amazing things outside of his nine-to-five job. Couper helped him create a functional resume that focused on transferable skills instead of the administrative ones related to his job as an assistant. Below is an example from his before and after resumesBeforeEmployer name, Los Angeles, CA, Dates of employmentAssistant to Senior Vice PresidentResponsible for day-to-day office administration for two executives. Maintained calendar and schedule, handled heavy phones, generated correspondence, arranged travel and itineraries, organized weekly meetings of department heads, assisted coordinator of the department with overflow work.Employer name, Los Angeles, CA, Dates of employmentExecutive AssistantDay-to-day office administration for senior executives including COO. Handled phones, roll calls, maintained calendar. After (functional skill areas only)Development TelevisionCollaborated on the pitch processDevelopment FilmRead daily spec and scripts submissionsFilm ProductionAssisted the Production Coordinator for X Productions. Responsible for communication and day-to-day tasks for actors, set and crew.Video ProductionFilmed, produced and edited videos of interviews with major celebrities.Management /Coordination/AdministrationManaged day-to-day office administration for two executives. Those skills are just a few excerpts of the candidates talents, none of which were detailed in his original resume. He was hiding his amazing talent under t he ?assistant title, Couper said, and thereby was ensuring that employers would lowball him.Dont Go OverboardA word of caution about maximizing your potential salary offers Theres pumping up your worth, and then theres just plain old puffery. While its certainly important to put the best possible spin on your jobs and accomplishments, its just as important not to go too far, said Shel Horowitz, a marketing consultant who dubs himself the Ethical Marketing Expert.Horowitz recalled a librarian who approached him with a resume written by a professional resume writer that exaggerated to the point where the woman was uncomfortable. They had described a library page job as if it was a library director position, he said. In other words, they had gone so far over the line that there was zero credibility.Horowitz toned down the job description but also took care to delineate the progression of skills his client acquired as she continued her career in later library positions. The woman was hi red shortly after as a library department director.Honestly, I dont think she would have been offered the position had she pretended to have had directorial responsibilities as a page, he said.Walk the TalkThe bottom line on maximizing salary potential with your resume is this You can come off as pure gold in your resume, but if you cant support that impression in the interview, your chances of a job offer shrink, let alone your chances of a larger salary offer.Remember that perfect candidate who applied to TalktoCanada.com? The one Zavitz said her company was willing to pay 20 percent more to hire?Well, she bombed in the interview. Zavitz said it was awful - like pulling teeth to get information out of her.Sometimes I have contacted people who have great resumes but who act unprofessionally in an interview and whose subsequent e-mails contain grammar and spelling errors, she said. You interview them, and theyre not a grand thing at all.Your resume is your chance to get your foot i n the door. Make sure the rest of you matches the foot.

Describe a Situation in Which You Led a Team
Describe a Situation in Which You Led a TeamDescribe a Situation in Which You Led a TeamThis question is your opportunity to give a real-world example. You are going to describe a situation in which you led a team. You are going to give an example of leadership experience, show how you manage and show your impact on an organization. This also means discussing results. An employer is trying to gauge a few different things with this question. Mainly, they are trying to get a deeper look at your management and leadership experience to see what tactics you use to lead, plan, delegate and evaluate a project. They also want to see how you demonstrate your leadership skills.Picking a projectThe hardest part of this for some may be picking the project in which you led a team.. It is okay to have a stock project that you use for all interviews, as you will be highlighting different aspects depending on the role and company. However, if you havent already picked your project a great way to start is by reviewing your recent accomplishments.Make a list of recent accomplishments in which you had management and leadership experience from the brde two years. It is best to pick a recent project when answering this question. If you do not have a lot of management and leadership experience, think about projects that you have completed in school or when doing community service or volunteer work. Now that you have identified several projects that you could speak about, take a look back at the job description. Do any of your projects directly relate to the experience the job is asking for? If not, dont worry. Although it is nice to point out similarities in experience it is not required in order to answer the questions well. Identify the management and leadership skills that the organization is highlighting. This is what is important.LeadMost employers already know what the last projectwas that you led. They are looking to see if your management and leadership style meshes with their c urrent culture and team. In some select cases, they are looking for your style to shake up the organization. The job description will give you clues to what kind of leader the organization is looking to hire. If the leadership skills do not jump out at you then focus on the key skills, what key skills would allow me to lead this type of project?Identify two or three key skills or leadership styles that you would like to highlight.PlanMake a timeline of the project, noting all large milestones. Consider why the project was initially started or why you got involved, how many people were on the team, and what major ideas or impact you had on the project. If it was a team of one, then consider who you had to collaborate with in order to complete the project. You may not touch on all the milestones when answering the questions but it is important to have them in mind when starting to craft your answer.DelegateIf you are interviewing for a management or senior role, showing your ability to delegate tasks will be important. Did your team come across any hiccups when working on this project, make koranvers to include how you handled them.EvaluateMost importantly of all, what was the outcome of the project and how was it measured. It is okay if the outcome was not positive just make sure to note what you would have done differently. You should make a mental note of what you would have done differently even if the project was a success. This will show an employer that you are striving for greatness and analyzing where you can improve.Construct an answer that combines the followingProblem or why the project was initiatedMajor steps that were taken or how you proceeded with the project, including how you collaborated/led teams and resolved issuesOutcome, including how you evaluated whether the project was a success or measured outcomeGood luck

What working moms are thinking this Mothers Day
What working moms are thinking this Mother's Day What working moms are thinking this Mother's Day Working moms share what itâs like to be a working mother in Laddersâ latest survey. Motherâs day is here, and I wanted to talk to you guys about something I call Mom guilt. Iâm not talking about the guilt trips our Moms all treated us to when we didnât clean our room as a kid, or now when we donât call as often as they would like. Iâm talking about the massive guilt every working Mom feels every day. Guilt that we are not spending enough time with our kids, coupled with guilt that our work may be suffering from not having our undivided attention 24 hours a day.Ladders recently released a survey to more than 250 women who are, or soon will be, working mothers. The results had me nodding furiously while answering a work email, changing my daughterâs diaper and submitting my sales forecast all at the same time (yes, moms multi-task). Balancing a career and a family is a huge struggle for 87% of respondents, with 55% admitting that âexcelling at both is overwhelming.â In addition, when it comes to balance, 13% âstruggled at first, but now itâs under control,â 16% âalways put family first and work has suffered for it,â and 3% âalways put work first and family has suffered for it.â I can only assume that the other 13% that said they âSuccessfully manage both aspectsâ actually slipped on baby drool and tripped into the computer, selecting the wrong line by mistake.Either way, the survey results are enlightening, and while I still feel that pang of guilt when missing little milestones in my daughterâs life or needing to run out of work early once in a while, at the very least this survey assures me that I am not alone. Download a PDF version of the survey today. And donât forget to call your Mom!

The 20% of activities that got you here are the 80% keeping you stuck
The 20% of activities that got you here are the 80% keeping you stuck The 20% of activities that got you here are the 80% keeping you stuck âTo keep up with the world of 2050, you will need to do more than merely invent new ideas and products, but above all, reinvent yourself again and again.â? - ?Yuval Noah HarariWhat got you here wonât get you there. You have to ask yourself: Whatâs your ultimate goal?Is it a specific destination (status)? Or is it continuous expansion (growth)? If itâs the former - then you actually can continue doing the same thing over and over and over. But if your ultimate goal is continuous growth and expansion, then you must continuously disrupt your current approach. You can never get stuck. Even when what youâre doing is working, you canât allow yourself to peak and plateau. The worldâs most creative and successful people are willing to disrupt even the most successful businesses and processes to get to the next level. What got you here canât get you there. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.Your behavior and environm ent generate your results. Repetition, although vital, becomes the very things that get you stuck in a rut.For the few willing to continuously chase the next wave of growth, regardless of the waves theyâve ridden in the past, this post is for you:The 80/20 ruleThe Pareto principle (also known as the 80/20 rule, the law of the vital few, or the principle of factor sparsity) states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes.80% of your success comes from 20% of what youâre doing. The logic, then, is to cut out the âtrivial manyâ and focus directly the âvital fewâ - those activities, relationships, rituals, and environments that are actually pulling you forward. This isnât necessarily easy to do in a world of constant distraction, not to mention the need to pay bills, etc.But for the brave souls who decide to take a step back and examine the situation of their lives more mindfully, they quickly realize they were playing someone elseâs g ame in the first place. They donât need to do everything they believed they needed to do. In fact, they could actually begin living their dreams, today. Sure, it may be messy. They may have to wake up an hour earlier to sneak some work in before the kids wake up, or before their college exam. But their behavior begins to align more congruently with the future they want, with the life that they want. Those behaviors begin to have a subconscious effect. They begin disconnecting increasingly more with the typical ways most people operate. They discover more ways to focus on their priorities and goals.Over time, their life starts to change. They become more confident and capable. They begin making progress and seeing results.Chances are, theyâve initiated what psychologists call a âkeystoneâ habit or behavior, which ripples into all the other areas of their life. Their standards for themselves increase, so they begin listening to and reading more stimulating information. They begin working out. They become more thoughtful in their relationships. They change. They become âsuccessful.âAnd then, at some point or another, they get stuck. The 20% of activities that elevated them out of the rat-race become the new 80% of activities that keep them stuck in a new one. They now are left scratching their head and wondering: Is this what I really want?An existential crisis ensues, wherein they begin to question everything. They think back on their successes and failures over the prior years and become scared.Their mind fixates on the past. They no longer have a deep connection to their future because theyâve powerfully achieved most of their goals, faster than they thought possible. They lose connection with their WHY and feel lethargic. Just at the pivotal moment when they became world-class at what they were doing, they became bored.Thatâs a costly place to be.At the very moment when your work is worth potentially millions, you are no longer connected to that same p assion.Youâre lost. And this is exactly where youâre supposed to be.- - - The remainder of this article breaks down the four fundamental stages of learning and high-performance.Following that break-down, I will highlight the powerful strategy and mindset of âlateral thinking,â and how you can apply it to continuously leverage your prior successes, never get stuck, and continuously upgrade your vision and your future. The four stages of competenceHere are the four stages of knowledge/skill acquisition: Unconscious incompetence: This is where you have no comprehension that you donât have a particular skill or ability. You donât see the usefulness of it. You must recognize your own incompetence and the value of the new skill before moving to the next stage. Conscious incompetence: At this stage, you donât have the skill developed but you can at least now see your own inability. You can also see the value of the particular skill, and it becomes desirable to you. At this stage, you need to start making mistakes and stumbling your way through the early learning process. Most people stop here because they donât want to face the failures or the seeming mountain of learning the new skill. They give up before they really start, due to either a fixed-mindset or a belief that the amount of work isnât worth the uncertainty of the outcome. Conscious competence: At this stage, you know how to do something. However, in order to perform the skill, you need to concentrate. You can break your process down into steps but there still remains conscious involvement in executing your skill. Hitting the ceiling of this third stage is where âsuccessfulâ people stop. You can get paid really well for being at this level. This is where you are really good at what you do, but you havenât drifted back to the childlike play - where everything is instinctive and nothing really matters. You havenât fully become absorbed in what youâre doing for the sake of it, where youâve left all competition behind. But once you take that next leap out of conscious control and into deep intuition, then youâre now in your own world. You have deep mastery, and you also have complete freedom. You now have a completely open pasture. Youâre no longer bound to doing your work, your âcraft,â for money. Youâve developed the inner freedom to know that money is something you can have whenever you want it.You can create wealth - because creativity is a realm youâve become highly comfortable with. You create results, you donât wait for them. You know that the thoughts and ideas you have can quickly translate into physical equivalents.Youâre no longer bound by the chains of needing to make ends meat. If you need to make something happen, youâll do it.So now youâre free.Free to roam and create - or, if you want, to go to the next level where few people are willing to venture. This final stage is where pure creativity can thrive. This is where the true masters go, and for them, their greatest joy is going deeper down the rabbit hole. Their mission has become to serve the broader world. They are no longer concerned about their own needs. Thoughts about themselves and their situation rarely arise to their conscious awareness. They are radically interested in solving bigger problems. Theyâre interested in inventing new systems, processes, ideas, products, and solutions. This is the highest level of skill-development.Specialists work.Experts solve problems.Craftsman invent.Specialists are a member of a team or part of an already established system or process. Experts focus on mastery.Craftsman focus on mission. Unconscious competence: The final stage of skill development and knowledge acquisition is where your identity has entirely reformed - wherein you can not only perform your skill instinctually and without thinking, but you can teach your knowledge, skills, and abilities to others in multiple contexts and at different levels. You know your stuff inside and out and can connect it to broader and seemingly disconnected topics/concepts. Perhaps the most fascinating part about reaching this level is that you stop playing by the ârulesâ of even masters. At this stage, you begin inventing new systems and processes and concepts. You begin changing the world.Because your knowledge is so deep and wide - and your skill so instinctual and polished - your mind can wander beautiful places while you do your work. You begin exploring realms far outside your typical âworkâ or âcraft.âYou begin thinking far bigger picture. And hereâs where lateral thinking comes in.Lateral thinkingâThe system will always be defended by those countless people who have enough intellect to defend but not quite enough to innovate.â - Edward de BonoIn the book, Smartcuts: How Hackers, Innovators, and Icons Accelerate Success, journalist and entrepreneur, Shane Snow, breaks down the topic of lateral thinking. He explains that the most successful people in the world didnât get there by climbing vertically up the ladder, as is custom ary in corporate America.Instead, you climb a few rungs or develop a few skills, and then laterally shift to a different ladder. This is akin to going from student to teacher faster than you feel ready, but it then forces you to really know your stuff. You take what youâve learned and you transfer it to something else. Interestingly, a true definition of learning is the ability to transfer a skill or knowledge from one domain or context to another.Snow provides an example, showing that most of the United States Presidents spent less time in politics than the average congressman. Moreover, the best, and most popular Presidents, generally spent the least amount of time in politics. Rather than spending decades climbing the tedious ladder with glass ceilings, they simply jumped laterally from a different, non-political ladder.Ronald Reagan was an actor. Dwight Eisenhower laterally shifted from the military. Woodrow Wilson bounced over from academia. These men spent considerably little time in politics and became fabulous Presidents. They reached the top by skipping the unnecessary âdues-payingâ steps.Insanely productive people think the same way. Rather than climbing up ladders the traditional ways, they think of alternative routes. They skip unnecessary steps by pivoting and shifting. As Snow says, âLateral thinking doesnât replace hard work; it eliminates unnecessary cycles.âThe moment you attain skill or success in something, leverage it. Use it, and then parlay it into something else.Continue developing the skills, knowledge, and mindset. But apply them in a way different from the norm. Apply them laterally, not vertically.Use your skills to help people in other industries.Perhaps be in a different industry than everyone else with your skill-set.Once your reach a plateau, rather than trying to bust through it, just do something different altogether. This isnât how you stop youâre skill and knowledge development. Itâs actually how you expand it . Itâs how you make your learning, thinking, and skills more fluid and dynamic. You can jump laterally to a different project or team for a while - which will be fundamentally good for your brain. But also, you can eventually jump back into your previous realm but at 10 or 100 or 1,000 steps higher than you were previously. In other words, you can avoid most of the glass ceilings and ridiculousness by skipping those steps. You develop skills, apply them in unique ways, and never get stuck. Then, if you want, you leverage your skills, insights, connections, and successes to apply them in a different way - but at a different level than you could ever achieve in a traditional manner. This is a highly adaptive and collaborative approach. Most people will prefer the routine of doing the same work in the same environments. Itâs safer. Itâs more predictable. Itâs slower, but at least there is security. It also stunts creativity and innovative thinking. It stunts experiencing wild new id eas and emotions. It stunts 10X or 100X thinking, where youâre now collaborating with people wildly different from you. When you begin to shift laterally, and try new things then youâve done in the past, your prior skills actually deepen, because you use them more subconsciously to guide your new insights. You take what youâve learned before and apply it to something new to quickly bring a new insight or project or challenge to success. You eventually become a master-learner.With these skills and mindsets, you can then evolve way beyond the realm of mastery, where everything is about personal growth and skill development. You truly can become an inventor with a sacred and powerful mission - and youâll have enough context, connections, and adaptability to take the mission to success.Donât get stuck with what worked beforeâThe step-by-step advice that made an ancient Greek hero rapidly prosperous will be entirely different from what makes a 21st-century businesswoman success ful, just as the exact methods an Internet startup uses to grow today will be irrelevant in five years.â - Shane SnowThe 20% of strategies that made you successful can quickly become the 80% that keep you stuck beneath a glass ceiling.Eventually, youâll need to pivot.Youâll need to become more fluid and dynamic.Youâll need to think laterally about how you can take your skills and abilities and apply them in a fundamentally different way then is typical. This is a far more creative and collaborative approach - but ultimately, itâs required to go 10X or 100X bigger than most people are willing to go.From a psychological standpoint, itâs also how you keep your brain continuously adapting, expanding, and becoming more creative. This is how you donât get rigid, stiff, and stuck.Do you want status? Or do you want growth? Is this about your skill-development and mastery? Or is this about changing the world and being a part of an important mission to improve the lives of other people? Those are questions only you can answer.Ready to upgrade?Iâve created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately. How to get a job without prior experience
How to get a job without prior experience How to get a job without prior experience Hereâs the challenge everyone who starts their career faces: You canât get a job because you donât have experience, but you canât get experience without getting a job.Itâs called the experience paradox or Catch-22 of getting a job. Itâs a real challenge. And if you canât overcome it, you can easily set your career 3 to 5 years back.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Worse, Iâve seen young folks and people who switch careers destroy their potential by making the wrong decisions early on.I donât want to scare you. You can still overcome the Catch-22; but not with conventional career advice. Because whatâs the standard advice for people who want to build a career?âCreate a resume, browse job boards, and respond to job applications.â Sorry to disappoint you. If you take that route, you will end up like most people: Frustrated and underpaid.Donât worry, th ereâs a different way. With the right strategy, you can break into any industry and earn what youâre worth. But I have to warn you. It takes at least twice as much work. However, that shouldnât be a surprise to you. If you want to have a better career than most folks, guess what; you have to BE better than most folks. When you do the following 2 things, you will become better- that will significantly increase your odds of getting a job without prior experience.1. Be The Person You Would HireWhy is it that companies prefer to hire experienced people for a role? When I started my career, I didnât understand it.The reality is that thereâs a massive difference between someone who doesnât have experience at a particular job and someone who has two years under their belt.Even though two years might not sound like a lot of time, itâs actually a lot of time to learn the ins and outs of a job. And especially when you recently got out of college; because your first two to three y ears are all about learning to be a professional. Some people never become serious about their careers. They wake up at a time so they can come to the office just in time. They prefer to sleep in. And they are the first to leave at 5 pm. They donât ask questions, donât seek out mentors, LOVE their lunch break, and chit-chat with their co-workers every chance they get.Imagine you would be the CEO of a company. Would you want a person like that on your team? Of course not.I must be honest; I used to be like that too. But I realized that attitude will not bring you far. If you want career success, you need to take it seriously. You only get rewarded for results. And what brings results? Skills. Now, the good news is that increasingly more companies are putting emphasis on the skills of the people they want to hire- not their experience. In his book, The Virgin Way, I read that Richard Branson, the famous founder of Virgin (that employs approximately 71,000 people), hires for characte r and skills. He prefers to actually get to know applicants instead of asking them a bunch of boring questions. If you seek out companies who hire for experience and skills, you have a good chance of getting hired- even if you donât have experience.Thereâs only one condition: You must be a person YOU would hire. Someone whoâs not only a professional but also has the skills to do a good job. If you feel like your skills are not that good yet, spend more time on your craft. So how do you find a company that hires for skills and character? You ask.Look, getting a job is NOT easy. It requires a lot of manual labor. Sometimes you need to reach out to hundreds of people to even get an interview. So thatâs what you do. Be ready to do whatever it takes. You reach out to people in HR of companies youâd like to work for. And you ask them about their interview process. How does the application process work? What are the characteristics youâre looking for in candidates? You can use tha t information to apply for jobs youâre interested in. But unlike people who blindly apply, you know what they are looking for.2. Do Free WorkOften, being good at your job and having information about the application process wonât cut it.Iâm a big fan of demonstrating your skills instead of talking about it. During the interview, we only talk. But when you offer to do free work for a company, you actually demonstrate your skills in a real-life setting. So how can you do free work? Larry Stybel, a clinical psychologist, wrote an article for HBR about his experience launching his career. He shares 3 great tips: Look for a company youâd love to work for and then be specific about what value you will provide- What will you exactly do for the company? No need to overpromise. Itâs better to be honest about what you can. Identify a person you want to work for, and reach out to them directly. Also send your resume along (watch my video on how to create a graphic resume with Canva for tips). Be specific about what value you will receive- Start with the end in mind. What do you want to get out of it? A reference? A potential job? Experience? Be specific about the time frame- You donât want to keep working for free forever. In Stybelâs example, he said: âI promised to work two days a week for two months.â Often, you canât even work full-time for free. Nor is it something I recommend. Use your time to keep searching for a job. One of the key lessons for everyone launching their career is to consider yourself as a learning machine. When you feel too proud to learn or work for free, you will be stuck sooner than later. But when you keep improving yourself and reaching out to people in the industry you want to work in, it will ultimately lead to a real job. This article first appeared on Darius Foroux. Recruiting Online Through Social Media
Recruiting Online Through Social Media Recruiting Online Through Social Media Recruiting Online Through Social Media Bennington We all know its expensive to make a bad hire. At best, youre out the time and resources it took to get the person up to speed. At worst, youre putting out fires in their wake. The good news is that, thanks to technology, employers now have unprecedented access to a virtual treasure chest of information on candidates, making hiring decisions much easier. In fact, these days almost half of businesses are using social media online tools to screen potential employees and that number will only continue to rise. Even small businesses are finding social mediacan be an enhancement to their hiringprocess. A good place to startis with social media sites. Be aware, though, that some of the information you find (such as a persons age, race, gender, religion, marital status or disability) should not be used to influence your hiring decision and laws around discriminatory hiring practices are still very much in place when recruiting online. Also keep in mind that job seekers write their own credentials on these sites. As such, there is no guaranteethat the information is always100% accurate. That said, where should you begin your research? Google (Of course) For the most part, candidates can control the information that appears on their social media profiles. They have considerably less control over what shows up on Google. So, before you check any of the other sites, do a thorough Google search, e.g. go back at least five pages and be sure to click on any links rather than rely on the summary text. Obviously, this becomes more difficult (if not completely useless) if the candidate has a fairly common name. For example, I teach a graduate course and one of my students is named you guessed it Jon Smith. Facebook Its a common best practice in business to hire for attitude, train for skill. And if ever there was a place to gauge attitude online, its Facebook. Assuming you have access to a potential employees account, resist the temptation to go straight to the pictures. Instead, take note of what theyre posting on their wall. Do they engage with friends positively and show enthusiasm, or do they whine and play victim? As with the Google search, youll want to scroll through a few pages to get a better sense of the overall picture. Pay special attention to group membership as well as the tone of their comments. Alone, these might not mean much, but together they can give you a sense of your candidates interests and interpersonal skills. Also, understand that Facebook is designed to be highly social, i.e., just because someone posts a photo with a cocktail in their hand doesnt mean theyre destined to go on bender at the office Christmas party. Twitter With as much of a beating as Twitter takes from non-users, Im always pleasantly surprised and impressed when I find a candidate here. Beyond the basics (i.e. appropriate username and photos) I dive deep into status updates and retweets, giving extra points to those who are sharing helpful articles and links as opposed to just documenting their day. I also take note of who the candidate is using Twitter to follow thought leaders and look for industry leaders, respected authors, major media sources and other signs of vigorous learners. Some recruiters are also finding Twitter to be a useful recruiting tool. LinkedIn I take note of job seekers who have a compelling summary, excellent recommendations and membership in industry groups. This shows me the candidate pays attention to detail and is actively seeking to build his or her career. You Tube As with the Google search, you dont go into You Tube expecting to find digital dirt. Sometimes, though, you get surprised. For that reason, no online due diligence is complete without searching for your applicant here. Finally, dont just rely on the Internet to evaluate potential hires. Especially if youre looking to fill a leadership role, put the most stock in what you see offline. In other words, your recruit could have the best web presence ever, but if hes rude to the waiter in the interview, its time to look elsewhere. Six Questions to Help your New Year Resolutions Succeed
Six Questions to Help your New Year Resolutions Succeed Six Questions to Help your New Year Resolutions Succeed Six Questions to Help your New Year Resolutions Succeed Reynolds, author of Why People Fail: The 16 Obstacles to Success and How You Can Overcome Them (Jossey-Bass, 2011) New year resolutions are easily made and just as easily forgotten. The fault often lies in the questions we choose to ask as we formulate our resolutions. These six questions from author Simon Reynolds will help you generate new year resolutions for both personal and business success in the year ahead. Excerpted from the book, Why People Fail: The 16 Obstacles to Success and How You Can Overcome Them by Simon Reynolds (Wiley, 2011). 1. What Would I Do If I Knew I Couldnt Fail? This is a classic question, because it gets to the very core of your self image and life dreams. It forces you to take a long, hard look at what you want out of life and what you believe deep down you deserve. Are you thinking too small? Are you putting unnecessary limits on your life? Take a few minutes now and remove the shackles from your mind. What have you oft en dreamed about but just assumed was impossible to achieve? What would you really love to do with your life? Make a list of your wildest, most exciting dreams. Come on, try it now itll only take a few minutes. Now ask yourself, are they really impossible? How could I make them happen? And furthermore, even if I couldnt achieve them would I learn a lot and have mountains of fun at least trying? 2. What Could Go Wrong? Get into the habit of asking yourself this fundamental question whenever youre at the crossroads of a major decision. I use the following system developed by Edward de Bono, the famous thinking expert, whenever I need to decide my future direction. First I create three columns that look like this: Positive Negative Interesting Under the first column, I list all the positives of making a particular decision. Then I force myself to evaluate all the negatives and write them in the second column. (Generally there is no decision that doesnt have at least some negatives if you think deeply enough about it.) Often after filling out the Negatives column I decide the venture is not for me. But if Im still unsure, I progress to the Interesting column. In the Interesting column you list all the less obvious aspects of the situation other peoples thoughts, situations that may be similar to yours, what your intuition says, and so on. Often its the Interesting column that really makes your pathway clear. I find it usually helps clarify my position pretty quickly and adds much more depth and texture to my thinking. 3. How Could I Make 10 Times More Money? It takes a certain amount of courage to treat this question seriously. Many people scoff at the notion that its even possible to earn 10 times more than they currently do. But thats exactly what makes the question so potent. Suspend disbelief for a moment and imagine that you could actually achieve this. How would you do it? What would you have to learn? Who would you need to partner with? What type of person would you have to become? 4. What Would X Do? This question is terrific when you find yourself in a tricky, complex situation youre having difficulty solving. Its a simple technique. All you do is think of someone you admire or who is renowned in your field and ask yourself what they would do if they were in the same situation. Literally pretend you are them for a few minutes. How would they strategize? What tactics do you guess they would employ? What would their attitude be on an issue like this one? 5. How Could My Competition Defeat Me? Try this quick exercise. Imagine that you work for your competitor. How would you beat your company? Where are your weak points? Where dont you stack up against the competition? Make a list of 3 5 areas where youre not absolutely superlative, then come up with ways to improve them. Constant refinement and innovation are compulsory if you are to remain at the top of your industry. Discover your flaws before other people do, then eradicate them before your competition even knows they exist. That is the secret to long term superiority. 6. Whats the Best Use of My Time Right Now? This basic question can be a rudder for your whole life. Keep coming back to it again and again and youll see it work its magic on your results. It forces you to get back to doing whats important, not just what is urgent or what pops up in your email. The great thing about this question is that its not about quantity, its about quality. And it points the way through the jungle of todos toward the one or two tasks that really count.
